두 부류의 이방인이 베를린의 모아빗 거리를 채우고 있다. 지멘스의 외국인 이주 노동자들과 그들의 가족들. 그리고 또 다른 이방인들이 거리를 배회하고 있다. 그들은 프레카리아트(precariat), 부랑자(rogue), 노숙자(homeless), 루저(loser) 등으로 호명된(be colled) 자들이다. ‘야만적’ 혹은 ‘위험한’ 같은 부정적 뉘앙스의 수사로 덧붙여진 자들이다.

고대로마제국이 라인강과 도나우강 인근에 설치한 ‘리메스 게르마니쿠스’(Limes Germanicus)는 현대의 지정학 이론가들에 의해 현대 국가의 변경의 한 특징을 나타내는 수사어로 활용되고 있다. 즉 ‘라메스’는 포용과 배제를 동시에 함축하는 경계(border)를 가리킨다. 리메스 게르마니카가 야만으로 규정된 게르만 족속을 배제하고, 문명으로 규정된 수도자나 상인을 포용한 것처럼, 베를린 장벽이 무너진 이후의 거리에는 문명의 이름으로 호명된 이방인과 야만의 이름으로 호명된 이방인을 가르는 리메스가, 저 보이지 않는 새로운 장벽이 놓여 있다.

Two types of strangers inhabit the street of Moabit. The first type includes foreign migrant workers and their families at the Siemens Corporation. The second type of strangers are those who hang about in the street. They are labeled precariats, rogues, homeless, and losers. These street-dwellers bear the burden of being framed as ‘barbaric’ or ‘dangerous’. The Roman Empire built a wall called Rimes Germanicus along the Rhine and Donau rivers. Some modern theorists of geopolitics use ‘Rimes’ to refer to the workings of modern nation states and their border regions. 'Rimes' implies the border zone-a place of both inclusion and exclusion.

The ancient ‘Rimes Germanica’ excluded Germanic tribes, categorized as "barbarian," while embracing the monasteries and traders as instances of "civilization". Even after the fall of the Berlin Wall, another kind of ‘Rimes’ continues to stand.
